Weekend box office: Bad Grandpa beats Gravity, but The Counselor flops

Weekend box office Jackass Presents Bad Grandpa

Although box office history is littered with shocks and surprises of movies both under and over performing, I maintain that the films that baffle me the most are the Jackass films.  Including their latest, JACKASS PRESENTS: BAD GRANDPA, they’ve had four films so far and each one (until now) has outperformed its predecessor at the weekend box office.  But even though Bad Grandpa couldn’t beat JACKASS 3D’s $50 million opening, it still managed to take the number one spot and knock off GRAVITY.  On the opposite side of the spectrum is the A-list powered THE COUNSELOR (click the link to read our review), which had enough star power to pack theaters and a high profile director and writer to boot.  But unfortunately, no one was interested.  The Ridley Scott directed film won’t even crack the $10 million mark and by all accounts, will prove to be a major flop for everyone involved.

Next week sees the release of ENDER’S GAME, which has been growing on me lately.  Admittedly, I wasn’t interested at all after the first couple of trailers, but the last trailer looked good and I have hopes for it.  I’m just not sure America is going to flock to the theater to see it.  We also have LAST VEGAS, which raises the question; who is the target audience for a movie about old guys partying in Vegas?  Finally, we have the animated FREE BIRDS.  Normally, animated movies do very well, especially when there’s no competition, but I’m not so sure about FREE BIRDS.  My guess is that GRAVITY sneaks back to the top, with an outside chance ENDER’S GAME surprises us.  Note: the numbers below will be updated when they become final.

1. Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa $33m

2. Gravity $20m

3. Captain Phillips $11.7m

4. The Counselor $7.5m

5. Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs 2 $6m

6. Carrie $5.9m

7. Escape Plan $4.4m

8. 12 Years A Slave $2.3m

9. Enough Said $1.5m

10. Prisoners $1m
