Weekend box office: John Wick can’t beat Ouija
It was the weekend of comebacks as Keanu Reeves proved he can still kill it in an action role as his JOHN WICK managed about $15 million at the weekend box office and Michael Keaton proved how talented he still is in the limited release of BIRDMAN. Unfortunately, neither did well enough to topple OUIJA, which has received some terrible reviews from critics, but has plenty of cheap scares that audiences love this time of year. I’m a little disappointed that JOHN WICK didn’t do better. Reeves has shed the airhead, surfer-dude persona that he brought to so many roles and I think he could kill it in another big budget Hollywood film. I’ll be curious to see if JOHN WICK was successful enough for a studio to give him that chance. The Bill Murray and Melissa McCarthy starring ST. VINCENT also did surprisingly well despite getting some mixed critic reviews. But Bill Murray being Bill Murray is too much to pass up, so it was good enough to finish in the top ten.
Next week sees the release of the gritty Jake Gyllenhaal starring NIGHTCRAWLER, which looks good, but I doubt it will do much at the weekend box office. We also have the re-release of the original SAW, which I find odd, but if people want a scary movie and they don’t want to sit through OUIJA, they might opt for something familiar. We also get the limited release of Daniel Radcliffe’s HORNS. Next week’s box office is up in the air, but I have to lean towards a horror movie since it’s Halloween.
