Weekend box office: Kingsman: The Golden Circle beats out The LEGO Ninjago Movie
After the surprise success of KINGSMAN: THE SECRET SERVICE, it was no surprise that Fox was eager to put the team back together for KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE to see if they have a genuine franchise on their hands. The new film opened with just over $40 million at the weekend box office, which is only slightly better than the $36 million the original opened with. Time will tell if that’s enough for Fox to continue with the franchise. This weekend also saw THE LEGO NINJAGO MOVIE open in theaters, which didn’t do so well. The popular kids cartoon finished with just over $22 million, which I’m sure is disappointing to Warner Bros. To be fair, I only recently learned what a “Ninjago” was and I’m not convinced the toy line was as popular as they thought it was. Finally, FRIEND REQUEST also opened to no applause and the Jake Gyllenhaal starring STRONGER opened very well in a limited release.
Next week sees the release of AMERICAN MADE starring Tom Cruise. The trailers make the film look great and it reminds me of JERRY MAGUIRE in the sense that it could give Cruise the chance to go back to being a great actor and not an action hero. It will be going against the FLATLINERS remake, which I’m not sure anyone wants. I hate to bet against Tom Cruise, but I think KINGSMAN: THE GOLDEN CIRCLE will make it two weekends in a row with AMERICAN MADE finishing in second place. Hopefully AMERICAN MADE will live up to my expectations and find a life on home video. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Kingsman: The Golden Circle $40.5m
2. It $30m
3. The LEGO Ninjago Movie $22.2m
4. American Assassin $6.1m
5. Home Again $3.4m
6. Mother! $3m
7. The Hitman’s Bodyguard $1.9m
8. Friend Request $1.7m
9. Stronger $1.5m
10. Wind River $1.3m
