Weekend box office: Madea battles Dragons for the top spot
Now that Tyler Perry’s Madea is a staple at the weekend box office, the amount of money a Madea movie brings in is starting to be more consistent. It seems that number is right around the opening number of MADEA FAMILY FUNERAL’s $25 million. I guess if your movie can make its budget back in one weekend, you’re doing a pretty good job. Right now, MADEA is looking at a second place opening, but the final Sunday numbers could change that easily. Last week’s number one, HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON: THE HIDDEN WORLD, is still in the top spot, but it’s just barely holding on. Recent Best Picture winner GREEN BOOK got a nice boost and jumped up to sixth place, just behind the other new movie of the weekend, GRETA.
Next week will belong to CAPTAIN MARVEL and I have no idea how well it will do. I’ve been writing box office news and predicting box office winners for over a decade and although we know CAPTAIN MARVEL will clearly take the top spot, I don’t know if the film will gross $60 million or $160 million. More professional box office pundits are divided as well, with about the same ranges. I’m going to go with $90 million. Early reviews are pretty good and Marvel is consistent, I’m just not sure CAPTAIN MARVEL has a broad enough appeal to exceed $100 million. However, I said almost the exact same thing about BLACK PANTHER, so I clearly don’t know what I’m talking about. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World $26m
2. Madea Family Funeral $25.8m
3. Alita: Battle Angel $6.7m
4. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part $5.8m
5. Greta $4.5
6. Green Book $4.4m
7. Isn’t It Romantic $4.3m
8. Fighting With My Family $4.1m
9. What Men Want $2.6m
10. Happy Death Day 2U $2.4m
