Weekend box office: Maleficent beats out X-Men
It feels like MALEFICENT has been in the works for decades. We’ve been hearing about it for a long time and it seems like Angelina Jolie has been attached to it the entire time. Her dedication paid off as MALEFICENT easily grabbed the top spot at the weekend box office, knocking off last week’s #1 film, X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST. The SLEEPING BEAUTY prequel had quite an impressive haul and I’m sure Disney is already thinking of ways to get Angelina Jolie back in that character. The other big, new movie of the weekend was Seth MacFarlane’s A MILLION WAYS TO DIE IN THE WEST (click the link to read our review), which didn’t fare as well. I don’t think anyone expected TED-like success, but not even hitting $20 million has people spouting words like “flop” around. The problem, of course, was that Seth cast himself and people don’t really like him if he’s not voicing a cute, cuddly teddy bear. That, and the movie just wasn’t consistently funny enough to attract a large audience.
Next week sees the release of Tom Cruise’s latest science fiction actioner, THE EDGE OF TOMORROW, along with Shailene Woodley in the very depressing-looking THE FAULT IN OUR STARS. THE EDGE OF TOMORROW looks like a fun ride and with MALEFICENT not getting the greatest reviews or the best word of mouth, it might have a chance to steal the top spot. It should give the guys something to do while the ladies flock to THE FAULT IN OUR STARS. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Maleficent $70m
2. X-Men: Days of Future Past $32.6m
3. A Million Ways To Die In The West $17m
4. Godzilla $12.2m

6. Neighbors $7.7m
7. The Amazing Spider-Man 2 $3.7m
8. Million Dollar Arm $3.7m
9. Chef $2m
10. The Other Woman $1.4m
