Weekend box office: Man of Steel does as expected while This is the End does well

Weekend box office Man of Steel

MAN OF STEEL is really the movie we’ve been waiting for all year. The film had so many questions as to whether or not it could finally do justice to arguably the most famous superhero of them all. But one of the biggest questions surrounding MAN OF STEEL (click the link to read our review) was how well it would do at the weekend box office. The answer? Quite well, but not mind blowing. In the world of THE AVENGERS ($207 million) and even this year’s IRON MAN 3 ($174 million), $113 million might be considered underachieving. But seriously, I don’t know what world we live in when a movie brings in over $113 million and isn’t considered a massive success. The real question might be how well the film will continue through the next few weeks. The other new movie of the weekend was the Seth Rogen, James Franco and friends apocalypse comedy THIS IS THE END, which should finish around $20 million. That’s not actually bad, but I still don’t understand the logic of releasing it counter to Superman.

Next week sees the long awaited release of Brad Pitt’s WORLD WAR Z and the prequel, MONSTERS UNIVERSITY. It will be interesting to see how both movies fare at the weekend box office. We can expect MONSTERS UNIVERSITY to do quite well since it has zero competition as far as kids movies. WORLD WAR Z will be another story since it’s going to be competing with MAN OF STEEL and something tells me Z will have to find a home on Blu-ray. I just don’t see MAN OF STEEL losing that much of its audience. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Man of Steel $113m

2. This Is The End $20m

3. Now You See Me $10.3m

4. Fast and Furious 6 $9.4m

5. The Purge $8.2m

6. The Internship $7m

7. Epic $6m

8. Star Trek Into Darkness $5.6m

9. After Earth $3.7m

10. Iron Man 3 $2.9m
