Weekend box office: Men In Black III dethrones The Avengers
After all the drama surrounding the production of MEN IN BLACK III, from Will Smith’s NYC bus incident to the fact they started filming without 75% of the script completed, it turns out that the film was actually pretty decent. Apparently, America thought so as well since MIBIII took the weekend box office, stealing the top spot from three time winner THE AVENGERS. Although $70 million is a little light for a Memorial Day weekend, it’s still good enough for the top spot, besting THE AVENGERS by nearly $20 million. Just how well MIBIII ends up doing will be debated by studio executives for weeks; some are saying it underperformed and should be considered a flop, others are pointing out that the franchise has been dead for ten years and it’s doing pretty well considering everything that was stacked against it. One thing’s for sure; America still loves Will Smith. The other new film of the weekend was THE CHERNOBYL DIARIES, which scored a sixth place opening, not bad considering it was a lower budget film without any major stars.
Next week sees the release of the Kristen Stewart Snow White film, SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN. I’m curious to see how well the film performs at the weekend box office, especially since MIRROR MIRROR came and went with barely a whimper. To be fair, this one has Thor and Bella, so it should attract a wider audience. Whether or not that audience will be large enough to take the weekend box office remains to be seen. Note: the numbers below are for the four day weekend and will be updated as they become final.
