Weekend box office: Minions has a stunning opening

People love Minions.  That was proven in the first two Despicable Me movies, but was cemented in stone after MINIONS managed to grab over $100 million at the weekend box office.  I knew it would do well, mainly because every kid has seen INSIDE OUT multiple times already, but I wasn’t expecting it to crack $100 million.  That basically means we’re going to get a MINIONS movie every couple of years for the rest of our life.  The other new movies of the weekend didn’t fare so well.  THE GALLOWS (click the link to read our review) came in fifth place, but I guess that’s not terrible considering how poor of a film it is and the competition in the middle of the summer.  And finally, there was the latest Ryan Reynolds film SELF/LESS, which barely cracked the top ten.  Ryan Reynolds seems like a great guy, but how many flops can the guy’s career handle?

Next week sees two big releases hitting theaters.  First, we get the much talked about ANT-MAN, which will show us if Marvel really is made of Teflon.  I’m sure it will do very well since Marvel has the benefit of the doubt at this point, but critics haven’t been overly kind to it so far.  We also get the comedy TRAINWRECK featuring Amy Schumer.  I’ve occasionally caught her show on Comedy Central and thought it was funny, but it will be interesting to see if her humor can translate to mainstream audiences.  In the end, I’m sure ANT-MAN will take the top spot, but I doubt it will hold onto it for long.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Minions $115.1m

2. Jurassic World $16.2m

3. Inside Out $15.8m

4. Terminator: Genisys $12.7m

6. Magic Mike XXL $9.1m

7. Self/Less $4.7m

8. Ted 2 $4.6m
