Weekend box office: Money Monster can’t beat Captain America
It’s yet another dominating performance at the weekend box office for Disney as they score the top two films with CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR and THE JUNGLE BOOK. Nothing was going to beat out Captain America in its second weekend, but the closest film was newcomer MONEY MONSTER starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts. The film has received mixed reviews and the $14 million or so it earned on its opening weekend was probably more due to the star power in the film than anything else. The other newcomer was the horror film THE DARKNESS, which cracked the top five, but could barely crack $5 million. Overall, it just doesn’t feel like anyone wants to compete with Disney.
Next week should make for another interesting weekend. First up is NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING with Seth Rogen and Zac Efron reprising their role from the 2014 comedy. Then we have the 1970’s set THE NICE GUYS with Ryan Gosling and Russell Crowe and finally, there’s THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE, which feels like it’s about 5 years too late. All three of these films have a chance to do well since they don’t really have any comedies or animated kids movies to compete with. But if we assume CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR pulls in about $50 million, I don’t see any of the three movies topping that. But I think NEIGHBORS 2: SORORITY RISING has the best shot at the second spot. I would normally bet on the animated movie but I’m just not sure there’s an audience for anything related to The Angry Birds anymore. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
