Weekend box office: Paranormal Activity 4 and Alex Cross finish strong

Weekend box office Paranormal Activity 4

I sometimes feel like a movie’s success at the weekend box office gives executives the misguided interpretation that they’ve made a good film.  Such is the case with PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4, which is clearly the worst reviewed film of the franchise that hasn’t had a good review since the original.  But on the other hand, it’s hard to argue with dollars and the Paranormal Activity franchise continues to rake in the dough.  The latest installment is soaring to the top spot with close to $30 million, easily beating the much better ARGO (click the link to read our review), which is in its second week.  The other new movie of the week, ALEX CROSS, also did well, cracking the top five.  I was curious to see if Tyler Perry’s fans would follow him to such a dark story and I’m not sure the film was successful enough to say one way or the other.  The studio apparently thinks so since they’re already moving ahead with a sequel.

Next week sees the release of my most anticipated movie of the month, CLOUD ATLAS.  I’m not sure the film will find commercial success, but it’s such an ambitious idea and project for the Wachowskis that I feel it’s one that has to be seen.  We also get the Gerard Butler surfing film CHASING MAVERICKS as well as SILENT HILL: REVELATION 3D and FUN SIZE with Johnny Knoxville.  Since it’s the last weekend before Halloween, I’m guessing PARANORMAL ACTIVITY 4 will finish strong again.  People love their horror films this time of year and it doesn’t usually matter if the film is enjoyable or not.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Paranormal Activity 4 $30m

2. Argo $16.7m

3. Taken 2 $13.3m

4. Hotel Transylvania $13.2m

5. Alex Cross $12m

6. Sinister $8.9m

7. Here Comes the Boom $8.5m

8. Pitch Perfect $6.8m

9. Frankenweenie $4.3m

10. Looper $4.1m
