Weekend Box Office: Prometheus and Madagascar 3 battle it out

Predicting the outcome at the weekend box office is tough, but the one constant is that an animated sequel, no matter how bad, will always do well.  I’d like to throw a couple of grenades on MADAGASCAR 3, especially after suffering through the second one, but from all accounts, the third one was much, much better.  But the only thing that guarantees is that there will be a fourth.  The movie that everyone is interested in is PROMETHEUS, which had a ton of buzz leading into the weekend and a lot of excitement, especially amongst fanboys.  Although the film is doing very well, it wasn’t enough for the top spot.  Perhaps it has something to do with the overall disappointment fans felt after watching the film.

As for THE AVENGERS watch, the film should end up finishing in fifth place this weekend, which is good enough to bring it’s total domestic box office haul to $561 million.  That’s good enough for third all time behind AVATAR ($761) and TITANIC ($659).  I’m thinking it will probably topple out at around $600 million, which is incredible, but not good enough to beat out James Cameron.  I’m also guessing that in a couple of months, we’ll be doing the same tracking with THE DARK KNIGHT RISES.

Next week should be an interesting one since it sees the release of THAT’S MY BOY and ROCK OF AGES, both of which look horrible.  Whatever the case, let’s hope Tom Cruise doesn’t get blamed for ROCK OF AGES.  As for THAT’S MY BOY, I keep thinking that Adam Sandler’s schtick has worn off, but his films still seem to do well, so who knows how his latest is going to do.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Madagascar 3 $60.3m

2. Prometheus $50m

3. Snow White and the Huntsman $23m

4. Men In Black III $13.5m

5. The Avengers $10.8m

6. Best Exotic Marigold Hotel $3.2m

7. What To Expect When You’re Expecting $2.7m

8. Battleship $2.2m.

9. The Dictator $1.5m

10. Dark Shadows $1.3m
