Weekend box office: Ralph Breaks the Internet continues to dominate
The most sure-fire way to win the weekend box office is to open strong the week before zero movies open. Disney figured this out a few years ago and so RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET is the top film, continuing its momentum from the Thanksgiving holiday with about $25 million. The slight surprise might come in the form of THE GRINCH, which leapfrogged CREED II for second place, proving that there’s no strong movie going audience than little kids. There wasn’t anything in the form of new, wide releases, but the smaller horror film THE POSSESSION OF HANNAH GRACE finished in the top ten thanks to a lack of competing horror movies.
Next week looks more like a dumping ground of Oscar hopefuls than anything, starting with the Saoirise Ronan starring MARY QUEEN OF SCOTS. Then there’s BEN IS BACK with Julia Roberts and VOX LUX with Natalie Portman. It’s hard to predict Oscar chasers, but my money is on RALPH BREAKS THE INTERNET making it three weekends in a row with Queen of Scots probably opening the strongest of the bunch. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Ralph Breaks the Internet $25.1m
2. The Grinch $16.8m
3. Creed II $16.5m
4. Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald $10.6m
5. Bohemian Rhapsody $7.9m
6. Instant Family $7.3m
7. The Possession of Hannah Grace $6.1m
8. Robin Hood $4.5m
9. Widows $4.2m
10. Green Book $4.1m
