Weekend box office: Serenity falters while Glass stays on top

Some of the smaller Oscar hopefuls typically get a nice boost at the weekend box office after the Oscar nominations are announced. Not so this weekend when only GREEN BOOK was able to see any sort of push. I was halfway expecting A STAR IS BORN to jump back into the top ten or maybe a little more love for THE FAVOURITE, but it seems there’s not much interest this year. And although interest in the Oscars is usually a personal thing, depending on how much you care about the nominated movies, it feels like it might be down across the board this year. Besides the quality of the films, it’s hard to get excited about the telecast considering they don’t even have a host. But as far as this weekend is concerned, GLASS continued to stay on top while the family film THE KID WHO WOULD BE KING cracked the top five with around $7 million. The Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway thriller SERENITY barely managed $4 million. Reviews suggested the film was bonkers, so that kind of reputation will probably lead to a decent showing on home video.

Next week sees the release of MISS BALA and ARCTIC, neither of which are expected to do much at the box office. Unless something strange happens, I wouldn’t expect the top five to change much next week. It feels like everyone is waiting for THE LEGO MOVIE 2: THE SECOND PART. And, of course, next weekend is the Super Bowl, which means everyone in Boston and Los Angeles at least are going to be watching the game.
