Weekend box office: The Smurfs can’t beat Boss Baby or Beauty and the Beast

Last weekend, THE BOSS BABY and BEAUTY AND THE BEAST went neck and neck at the weekend box office, with THE BOSS BABY just barely pulling it out and taking the number one spot.  This weekend, it’s more of the same and it looks like THE BOSS BABY might make it two weekends in a row.  There were only two real challengers to the top spot, the first being SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE, which came in third place.  This is a full animated Smurfs movie, moving away from the two previous live action-CGI hybrids.  But the result is about the same, with the film taking in less than THE SMURFS 2.  Then there was Zach Braff’s GOING IN STYLE, which did pretty well for what it is and is easily Braff’s biggest opening.  Although it didn’t challenge for the top spot, the faith-based film THE CASE FOR CHRIST opened up this weekend in seventh place.

Next week will belong to THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS.  Before FURIOUS 7 came out, I thought the series was either dead or dying and then FURIOUS 7 made an insane amount of money at the box office.  So there’s no reason to believe that THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS won’t do as much or more as FURIOUS 7, which puts the opening number at $147 million.  I think the eighth film will beat that pretty handily and might flirt with $200 million.  There are no other major releases next week because rival studios aren’t stupid.  You just can’t compete with Vin Diesel and The Rock.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. The Boss Baby $25.3m

2. Beauty and the Beast $24.1m

3. Smurfs: The Lost Village $14m

4. Going in Style $12.2m

5. Ghost in the shell $7.4m

6. Saban’s Power Rangers $5.9m

7. Kong: Skull Island $5.7m

8. The Case for Christ $4.6m
