Weekend box office: Star Wars: The Force Awakens continues to rule the galaxy

It’s all Star Wars all the time and the weekend box office is proof that the Star Wars juggernaut is here to stay, with no end in sight.  In its third weekend, the film has grossed over $90 million and when you think that maybe only a handful of films a year gross that much on their opening weekend, it’s pretty impressive.  I wasn’t expecting to start talking about all time records until early February, but with a total gross of over $740 million, STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS is now the second highest grossing movie of all time (not adjusted for inflation).  Yep, in three weeks, The Force Awakens is number two.  That means it will need another $20 million to beat out AVATAR and if this pace continues, it will beat AVATAR by Wednesday.  The scary thing is that the film isn’t even close to being done and it should easily be the first film to hit $1 billion domestically.  Also think that the sequel in two years will probably do better.  It’s Disney’s world and we’re just living in it.

Next week sees the release of THE REVENANT, or what should be called “The Worst Camping Trip Ever”.  Leonardo DiCaprio went all out in the film and I hope it’s enough to get him the Oscar.  We also get the small horror film THE FOREST, which I would normally pass off, but given the lack of horror, it could surprise us.  But we all know STAR WARS: THE FORCE AWAKENS will take the top spot and I wouldn’t be surprised to see it gain another $80+ million.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Star Wars: The Force Awakens $92.6m

2. Daddy’s Home $28.3m

3. The Hateful Eight $17.1m

4. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip $12.3m

5. Sisters $12.2m

6. Joy $11m

7. The Big Short $8.9m

8. Concussion $8m

9. Point Break $7.1m

10. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2 $4.7m
