Weekend box office: The Martian opens huge
It’s always refreshing when a quality film does surprisingly well at the weekend box office and such is the case this weekend as THE MARTIAN (click the link to read our review) managed to rake in over $55 million. The film has an all star cast led by Matt Damon and an A-list director in Ridley Scott and it looks like they managed to put everything together for a quality film. Speaking of quality films, SICARIO also did pretty well, coming close to $12 million on its first weekend with a wide release. It feels like SICARIO has been released in a different city every weekend and I’ll never understand why studios choose to do that. Which leads me to THE WALK, which did quite well in a limited release, coming close to cracking the top ten.
Next week sees the release of Joe Wright’s PAN, with Hugh Jackman and Rooney Mara. I love Joe Wright and he’s assembled a great cast, but I’m sick of the story of Peter Pan and I’m curious to see if America feels the same way. To his credit, it looks like Wright has found a way to tell it in a different, stylized way, but I’m still tired of the story. We also get the wide release of THE WALK with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and early reviews are hailing this as a masterpiece, so I’m excited to see if audiences turn out for it. People are also whispering Oscar nomination for Gordon-Levitt, which might help the film’s fun at the box office. But Id bet on another win for THE MARTIAN next weekend since the film has a lot of steam and great word of mouth. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. The Martian $55m
2. Hotel Transylvania 2 $31.7m
