Weekend box office: The Perfect Guy and The Visit do well
The sadness at the weekend box office continues as the summer blockbusters are long gone and the awards chasers haven’t hit theaters yet. THE PERFECT GUY took the top spot, followed closely by the latest horror film from M. Night Shyamalan, THE VISIT. I can’t think of a director in Hollywood that needs a hit more than Shyamalan and he should be pleased with $20+ million for THE VISIT considering the lack of star power and zero fanfare. 90 MINUTES IN HEAVEN wasn’t able to match the success of the other religious based film (WAR ROOM) at the box office as Heaven couldn’t even crack the top five.
Next week actually looks like a pretty good weekend, especially given the last few weeks. First up is the mountain climbing adventure film, EVEREST, which boasts a very impressive cast including Jake Gyllenhaal, Keira Knightley, Josh Brolin, Sam Worthington and more. I’m not sure if it’s more of an awards movie or a late summer movie, but it looks like a fun ride. We also get the sequel MAZE RUNNER: THE SCORCH TRIALS. I’m tired of the YA adaptations, but I thought the first Maze Runner film was better than most. Early word says the sequel is actually better, so it will be interesting to see how it does in theaters. Finally, we get the Johnny Depp starring BLACK MASS. I’m anxious to see how critics respond to it and whether or not it’s good enough to get Depp an Oscar nomination. My guess is that the Maze Runner sequel will take the box office, but it should be a tight race. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
