Weekend box office: The Predator dethrones The Nun
I wasn’t sure the world cared whether or not there was ever another Predator movie, but it turns out the $25 million mark is a good measure of the existing fanbase’s willingness to sit through another movie. PREDATORS took in about that and now THE PREDATOR (click the link to read our review) came in just above, which was good enough for the top spot at the weekend box office. Paul Feig’s slight departure from comedy, A SIMPLE FAVOR grabbed the third spot and Mcconaughey’s WHITE BOY RICK came in fourth. I’m sure WHITE BOY RICK had some awards season dreams, so it will be interesting to see how the lackluster box office haul impacts the film’s chances come award season.
Next week sees a hodgepodge of releases hitting the weekend box office. To start things off, we have THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS, which is going after the family-friendly audience. Then we have the latest from Michael Moore, FAHRENHEIT 11/9 and finally, there’s the tearjerker, LIFE ITSELF. This is a tough weekend to predict, but my guess is that THE HOUSE WITH A CLOCK IN ITS WALLS will take the box office since we don’t have much competition for the family audience and I don’t think the other two films have a wide enough audience. FAHRENHEIT 11/9 is a wildcard, but I think we all get enough depressing news just by turning on our smartphone. I can’t imagine there’s a large audience just clamoring for depressing news in the local megaplex. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
