Weekend box office: The Purge easily beats out The Internship
There are two big stories coming out of the weekend box office. The first is the overperforming of the horror thriller THE PURGE and the second is the failure of the Vince Vaughn, Owen Wilson comedy THE INTERNSHIP (click the link to read our review). For THE PURGE, it shouldn’t come as too much of a shock. The marketing for the film has been fantastic and there is zero competition at the box office for a clever horror film. Come to think of it, we shouldn’t be surprised about THE INTERNSHIP either. The PG-13 rating was basically the studio’s way of saying “Google is paying for this, so they get what they want”. Couple that with the bad reviews and even worse word of mouth and maybe it’s time for Wilson and Vaughn to reconsider that WEDDING CRASHERS sequel that should have happened 5 years ago. It’s a shame about THE INTERNSHIP because the concept of two out of work guys taking jobs as interns is a great basis for a comedy, but to have it executed so poorly is disappointing.
Next week belongs to MAN OF STEEL. All eyes will be on Zack Snyder’s reboot of the Superman franchise and if there’s a movie coming out this year with more implications, I can’t find it. The success of MAN OF STEEL is going to be scrutinized for weeks and if the movie underperforms, we’ll never hear the end of it. But the question is; what is “underperforming” for a Superman movie? SUPERMAN RETURNS made $200 million lifetime and was considered an epic failure. If MAN OF STEEL doesn’t manage to beat IRON MAN 3 ($390 million domestic and counting), I think most analysts will consider MAN OF STEEL a failure, fair or not. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. The Purge $36.4m
2. Fast and Furious 6 $19.7m
3. Now You See Me $19.5m
4. The Internship $18.1m
5. Epic $12.1m
6. Star Trek Into Darkness $11.7m
7. The Hangover Part III $7.3m
8. Iron Man 3 $5.8m
9. The Great Gatsby $4.2m
10. Mud $1.2m
