Weekend box office: Unbroken, Into the Woods and The Interview do well
It was a very impressive weekend for Hollywood as all of the new movies managed to do better than expected. As good as they did, nothing managed to beat out THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF FIVE ARMIES as the sequel took the top spot in a very crowded weekend box office. Leading the new movies was Angelina Jolie’s UNBROKEN (click the link to read our review), which seemed to be a hit with audiences despite getting mixed reviews from critics. I think Angelina Jolie’s involvement might be hurting the film as much as it is helping it. Personally, I think she did a fantastic job with a great story, but she seems to have much tougher critics than me. Next up is INTO THE WOODS (again, click the link to read our review), which also did well, but I can’t imagine it will have any legs at the box office. It was a tough one to get through. There were a couple of new movies that didn’t fare so well, including Mark Wahlberg’s THE GAMBLER and Benedict Cumberbatch in IMITATION GAME. The latter of which has had a slow and painful roll-out so it’s not a surprise it couldn’t do better than 8th place.
Of course, the movie everyone is talking about is THE INTERVIEW, which only opened in about 330 theaters, but did manage to pull in around $1.6 million in three days and $2.7 million since Christmas. It’s impressive that it made those kind of numbers in such a limited release, but it’s disappointing for a movie that should have opened to $30+ million. I thought it was hilarious and just as good as THIS IS THE END and better than NEIGHBORS (take that however you want). Next week sees the release of THE WOMAN IN BLACK 2 ANGEL OF DEATH, which might find some success since there are no other horror films at the box office right now. We’ll also get a limited release for A MOST VIOLENT YEAR, but I imagine THE HOBBIT will take the weekend box office again. Note: the numbers below are for the three day weekend and will be updated as they become final.
