Weekend box office: Us has a huge opening
The success and originality of GET OUT was enough to make a safe bet that Jordan Peele’s follow-up, US (click the link to read our review), was going to be successful at the weekend box office. But even the most liberal of estimates would have a hard time predicting it would double CAPTAIN MARVEL’s second weekend number. With almost $70 million, US is the biggest live action opening for an original (meaning, excluding Marvel, Star Wars, etc.) film since AVATAR. Not bad for a film that cost about $20 million. I think we can also safely say that director Jordan Peele has joined an elite handful of directors that can open their own movies, regardless of who is starring in them.
Next week sees the release of Disney’s live action DUMBO. This is a hard one to predict for several reasons, starting with Disney’s terrible non-Marvel live-action track record of late. But, Disney has had a lot of success adapting their famous cartoons into live-action movies, including CINDERELLA, BEAUTY AND THE BEAST and MALEFICENT. So…maybe DUMBO will fall in the latter category and do well. The movie also has Tim Burton at the helm, who is sure to bring a very stylized vision to the film. With all of that said, I think it will boil down to the fact that non many people love DUMBO in the first place and even the trailers made it looks kind of sad, which could hurt its box office dreams. Whatever it does, I don’t think it will be enough to knock US out of the top spot. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Us $68.5m
2. Captain Marvel $34.5m
3. Five Feet Apart $9m
4. Wonder Park $7.9m
5. How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World $6.8m
6. A Madea Family Funeral $4.3m
7. Gloria Bell $1.8m
8. No Manches Frida 2 $1.6m
9. The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part $1.1m
10. Alita: Battle Angel $1m
