Weekend box office: The Other Woman beats Captain America

Weekend box office The Other Woman

The last few years have proven that women are a strong, yet often underutilized audience for Hollywood and the fact that THE OTHER WOMAN managed to haul in around $25 at the weekend box office should be proof enough that movies like BRIDESMAIDS weren’t flukes.  To be fair, THE OTHER WOMAN isn’t the first female-led movie featuring three women getting back at a philandering man.  THE FIRST WIVES CLUB covered the same ground in 1996 and managed about $18 million on its opening weekend (although considerably more if you adjust for inflation).  But the point is that THE OTHER WOMAN did well and hopefully we’ll get more female-led movies at the weekend box office in the coming years.  The other new movies of the weekend didn’t fare so well.  Paul Walker’s BRICK MANSIONS finished around fifth place.  If you haven’t seen the French film D13 that it was based on, you should definitely check out the original.  The horror film THE QUIET ONES did okay, finishing in the bottom half of the top ten.

Next weekend of course, belongs to THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2.  And although I’m personally not that excited about seeing Spider-Man take on 27 villains in two hours, the movie is going to be huge because America loves Spider-Man.  I don’t think the movie will break any records and it will be an interesting analysis if THE AMAZING SPIDER-MAN 2 doesn’t beat the $95 million opening that CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE WINTER SOLDIER managed just a few weeks ago.  It will also be interesting to see how far Cap slips with a competing superhero movie.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. The Other Woman $25.4m

2. Captain America: The Winter Soldier $15.9m

3. Heaven is For Real $13.9m

4. Rio 2 $12.7m

5. Brick Mansions $9.6m

6. Transcendence $4m

7. The Quiet Ones $3.8m

8. Bears $3.4m

9. Divergent $3.3m

10. A Haunted House 2 $2.8m
