Weekend box office: Wreck-It Ralph and Flight lead the way
Although most critics seemed to agree that Disney’s WRECK-IT RALPH was high on good ideas but lacked in execution, it didn’t stop the kiddos from coming out in droves to see it, making it the number one movie at the weekend box office. Kids movies always do well and although it had to compete against HOTEL TRANSYLVANIA and FRANKENWEENIE, they didn’t really pose a threat since Halloween is over. That, and by bringing in some classic video game characters, the film managed to appeal to the older audience members looking for that nostalgia feeling. Overall, I’d say WRECK-IT RALPH is a hit for Disney, who is still riding high after their acquisition of Lucasfilm. The other new movies of the weekend fared pretty well too, with Denzel Washington turning in another outstanding performance in FLIGHT, shooting the drama to the #2 spot. The genre film THE MAN WITH THE IRON FISTS did moderately well for what it was and looks like it will finish in the top five.
Next week sees the release of SKYFALL, featuring the return of Daniel Craig as James Bond. If the film is half as good as what the early buzz indicates, then SKYFALL will be huge next week and the only question is; how much will SKYFALL bring in? It managed to break British box office records, but it will be interesting to see how it does in the United States. I don’t expect any records to fall, but I think it’s safe to say it will mark the biggest opening for a James Bond film. Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.
1. Wreck-It Ralph $50m
2. Flight $25m
