Who will take home the Oscar? Acting Predictions for the 2019 Academy Awards
It’s Oscar week! The 91st Academy Awards honoring “what they believe to be” the best films of 2018 will air this Sunday February 24 on ABC. As this is usually a very exciting time for people like me, it’s strange to feel a bit unenthusiastic about the host-less big night. Unfortunately, I think it has to do with my complete confusion with some of the nominee choices. Nonetheless, it’s time for my over-analyzation of all the categories. I’m gonna kick off my annual Oscar predictions with the acting categories. Firstly, it’s important to note, I’m not overly passionate about many of these nominees. Secondly, you can check out all the “Best Performances Not Nominated for an Academy Award” by clicking the link. Thirdly, I truly hope Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga do not win. With that said, lets get to the Oscar Predictions!
Best Actor
Christian Bale, Vice
Bradley Cooper, A Star Is Born
Willem Dafoe, At Eternity’s Gate
Rami Malek, Bohemian Rhapsody
Viggo Mortensen, Green Book
Many believe Christian Bale to be the favorite. But winning most of the awards leading up to this point, Rami seems like the obvious choice over Bale and Cooper. People love Freddy Mercury and Queen. So much so that the film is being awarded not because of its quality, which is low, but because of how much people love hearing Queen music. The best way to award the film is by giving the golden statue to a guy that did a convincing portrayal of the music icon.
Winner: Rami Malek in BOHEMIAN RHAPSODY
Best Actress
Yalitza Aparicio, Roma
Glenn Close, The Wife
Olivia Colman, The Favourite
Lady Gaga, A Star Is Born
Melissa McCarthy, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
As long as it’s not Lady Gaga, I won’t mind who the winner is. McCarthy continues to impress in whatever she does, but I’m pulling for Olivia Colman for THE FAVOURITE, who stole the show from a couple of big time actresses in Rachel Weisz and Emma Stone. But I don’t think anyone is going to steal the gold away from the beloved veteran actress Glenn Close who has been nominated six times with zero wins. I believe seven will be the charm.
Winner: Glenn Close in THE WIFE
Best Supporting Actor
Mahershala Ali, Green Book
Adam Driver, BlacKkKlansman
Sam Elliott, A Star Is Born
Richard E. Grant, Can You Ever Forgive Me?
Sam Rockwell, Vice
This is a tough one. All sound logic says to go with the favorite, Mahershala Ali for GREEN BOOK, who has been sweeping the awards circuit. A well-deserved win two years ago for MOONLIGHT in the same category shows how much respect he garners. However, I have this silly gut feeling that an upset could happen in one of these acting categories. Sam Elliott is the best thing about A STAR IS BORN and might be the one to do it, since the film is mystifyingly loved by many. I’d actually prefer Grant for CAN YOU EVER FORGIVE ME or Driver for BLACKKKLANSMAN. However, Mahershala is currently turning an award winning performance in the current season of HBO’s True Detective, so I’m gonna stick with the safe bet.
Winner: Mahershala Ali in GREEN BOOK
Best Supporting Actress
Amy Adams, Vice
Marina De Tavira, Roma
Regina King, If Beale Street Could Talk
Emma Stone, The Favourite
Rachel Weisz, The Favourite
Amy Adams has been nominated six times now. Unfortunately, she’s gonna have to hold out even longer for that elusive win. Stone and Weisz will cancel each other out. Marina De Tavira could possibly pull off a surprise upset, but I’m guessing King will be accepting the award. It’s hard to say though since the best performances for this category weren’t even nominated (Emily Blunt in A QUIET PLACE and Claire Foy in FIRST MAN)
Winner: Regina King in IF BEALE STREET COULD TALK
