Will Smith, Tom Hardy, Margot Robbie and more sign on for Suicide Squad
It took a while and in the process, we had to endure a lot of rumors and speculation about who Warner Bros. would cast as their Suicide Squad. Early reports had Will Smith, Tom Hardy and Ryan Gosling in the film and most people thought they were crazy for thinking they could get any one of those guys, let alone all three. Well, Ryan Gosling wasn’t game, but it looks like Will Smith and Tom Hardy are set. Not only that, but Jared Leto, Margot Robbie, Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne are also on board. So who is playing what? Will Smith is the kind-of-leader, Deadshot, Tom Hardy is Rick Flagg, Jared Leto is the Joker, Margot Robbie is Harley Quinn, Jai Courtney is Boomerang and Cara Delevingne is Enchantress. David Ayer is directing the film that’s due to hit theaters on August 5th, 2016. And if Warner Bros.’s dreams continue to come true, they’ll get none other than Oprah Winfrey to play Amanda Waller. Seriously.
Most of the casting makes sense. Will Smith needs a hit to keep his superstar status. Margot Robbie needs a high profile film to continue her rise. Jared Leto needs something bigger since most people couldn’t pick him out of a lineup, while Jai Courtney and Cara Delevingne are just lucky to be there. But the one I don’t get is Tom Hardy. He’s a star now and can do what he wants, so I’m not sure why he’d join another superhero (or in this case, supervillain) film where he has to share the screen. I’m guessing it has something to do with WB delivering a dumpster full of cash to his front doorstep. There was no mention of Jesse Eisenberg playing Lex Luthor, but I’m guessing he’ll have a cameo at some point in the film. After all, being a villain is expensive and they’ll need funding. (Variety)
