Woody Allen, Penelope Cruz and Jesse Eisenberg in new images from To Rome With Love
As a lover of all movies, I find a sort of obligation to like Woody Allen movies. But no matter how hard I try, or how many chances I give the guy, I just can’t bring myself to say I’m a Woody Allen fan. I respect the amount of movies he’s done and I definitely respect his dedication to the art of movies, but I just don’t enjoy his films. So I can’t say I’m too excited for Woody Allen’s next ode to a foreign city in TO ROME WITH LOVE. Hot off the heels of his most successful film of all time, MIDNIGHT IN PARIS, Allen is back in Europe to explore the eccentricities of another romantic city. Unfortunately, rather than trying to find an actor to play Woody Allen, he has decided to star in the movie himself. Which, in my opinion, is the kiss of death for every Woody Allen film since ANNIE HALL.
In typical Woody Allen fashion, very little is known about the film. At one point, it was believed that the film would feature four intertwined stories, two with American actors and two with Italian actors speaking Italian. But I’m guessing since Sony moved this to a summer release, there won’t be much Italian spoken in the film. Summertime isn’t typically the ideal time-frame to release a movie with American stars that’s half subtitled. But you never know how audiences will react to a Woody Allen film.
Along with Woody Allen, the film features Penelope Cruz, Jesse Eisenberg, Ellen Page, Greta Gerwig, Alec Baldwin, Roberto Benigni, Alison Pill, Judy Davis and Italian stars Monica Nappo, Flavio Parenti, Antonio Albanese, Alessandro Tiberi, Alessandra Mastronardi and Fabio Armiliato. TO ROME WITH LOVE marks Woody Allen’s first starring role since the 2006 stinker SCOOP. The film hits theaters everywhere on June 22nd.
