X-Men: First Class tops The Hangover Part 2 at the box office

As much as I enjoyed X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, I was concerned it wasn’t going to do well financially.  Let’s face it; the best films don’t always do well at the box office.  Not only that, but this X-Men doesn’t have any household names or any superheroes that casual fans love (characters like Wolverine, Storm or Cyclops).   But I was pleased it at least came in first place over the weekend with almost $55 million, which came close to matching what the original X-MEN film did, but not enough to beat the Wolverine film that pulled in $85 million.  Some execs at Fox may call this disappointing, but when you make a film as great as X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, you shouldn’t be disappointed.  Thankfully, the film pulled in enough to beat out last week’s top film THE HANGOVER PART II and strong word of mouth should help it along.

Next week brings us SUPER 8, which is director J.J. Abrams homage to the older films of Steven Spielberg.  Fans are excited for this one, but it might suffer the same problem as First Class in that it will probably be great, but has no recognizable stars or characters.  Note: the numbers below will be updated when they become final.

X-Men First Class

1. X-Men: First Class $54m

2. The Hangover Part II $33.5m

3. Kung Fu Panda 2 $25m

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides $19m

5. Bridesmaids $12.5m

6. Thor $4.2m

7. Fast Five $3.3m

8. Midnight in Paris $2.8m

9. Something Borrowed $1m

10. Jumping the Broom $800k
