Top Ten Shocks, Surprises, Snubs and Stats about the 2013 Oscar Nominations

5. Christoph Waltz beats out DJANGO UNCHAINED co-stars – Christoph Waltz did an amazing job in his work for DJANGO UNCHAINED.  But many thought the nod might go to fellow co-star Leonard DiCaprio for his role as a ruthless slave owner.  Samuel L. Jackson was also in the discussion and I personally think all three guys deserved a spot on the ballot. However, with only five nominees, it’s understandable only one would make the cut.  Despite consistent amazing work, poor DiCaprio just can’t seem to get a win. But I would have chosen Waltz as well.

Jackie Weaver, Bradley Cooper in Silver Linings Playbook 2

4. Jackie Weaver slips in as a Supporting Actress Nominee – Don’t get me wrong, Weaver did a fine job but her nomination comes seemingly out of nowhere beating out a list of other women.  SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK received the third most nominations with 8 and is the first film since Warren Beatty’s REDS in 1982 to have nominations in all four acting categories.

Emmanuelle Riva in Amour

3. AMOUR racks up 5 nominations – Foreign films rarely put up such a big number at the Academy Awards.  Sure their are a few exception but with nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress and Best Original Screenplay, the French film is a lock for Best Foreign Film leaving that category utterly worthless in anticipation.

2. LOOPER, PERKS OF BEING A WALLFLOWER receive no love – Many believed one of these two films might sneak in a Screenplay nomination. Alas, my hope for a LOOPER recognition was just wishful thinking.

2013 Academy Awards

1. The Academy Awards are no longer predictable – No one can deny that they didn’t see some of these choices coming. I think what makes some of these surprise choices so shocking is that they are not necessarily bad but quite bold.  I like some (not all) of these choices the Academy made and I think they should be somewhat commended for thinking a little bit outside the box… at least for this year… and until they announce the winners.
