Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Fassbender and the top ten performances in 2012 not to receive an Oscar Nomination
5. Jean-Louis Trintignant in AMOUR – The Academy recognized Emmanuelle Riva’s exceptional performance as the dying life mate, but Jean-Louis Trintignant does all the heavy lifting. As a husband trying to take care of his wife through her downward spiral in age and sickness, Trintignant displays inward love, fear, lonliness and sadness all at once.

4. Ann Dowd in COMPLIANCE – Probably the most disturbing film of the year, COMPLIANCE finds a prank call at a fast food restaurant escalating into a shocking sexual misconduct of epic proportions. Based on true events, the film is a sad representation of the mindless obedience of others over the simple act of doing the right thing. Anne Down as the foolish manager is so convincing you’d think you were back at your high school job.

3. Leonardo Dicaprio/Samuel L. Jackson in DJANGO UNCHAINED – Christoph Waltz got the deserved nomination but these two actors were equally awesome displaying crazy villainous actions that are giddy-filled entertainment. Jackson proved he can still deliver and DiCaprio showed he always delivers.
2. John Hawkes in THE SESSIONS – Hawkes has been a long time character actor who blends into his supporting roles. Here he finally gets a leading role as a man in an iron lung determined to lose his virginity. Hawkes plays the character with honest sincerity and sweet understanding.

1. Richard Gere in ARBITRAGE – As a long time Hollywood actor, Gere has never really been associated with the respect of Oscar caliber acting. It’s a shame because clearly the man has great talent. From blockbusters like PRETTY WOMAN, FIRST KNIGHT and CHICAGO to smaller gems like UNFAITHFUL, PRIMAL FEAR and the HOAX, Gere has no boundaries. Gere plays a perceived wealthy family man who has to cover up some very illegal and immoral actions with such convincing conviction, that his evil character becomes quite compelling to the audience. What makes it work so well, is that he believes he’s doing the right thing.
