Jurassic World: Rebirth Movie Review
It has been over 30 years since Steven Spielberg’s groundbreaking JURASSIC PARK. Six sequels later, and no movie has been able to capture the magic. That’s a pretty steep standard to measure by and I by no means think the filmmakers believe they can achieve that high mark. But I believe they think they can make a pretty fun and cool dinosaur movie. Is JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH a thrilling fun summer dinosaur movie? Sometimes.
Post the events from JURASSIC WORLD: DOMINION (2022), REBIRTH wisely attempts a bit of rebrand. A top secret, illegal expedition is put together to extract some DNA from three massive prehistoric creatures for a groundbreaking medical breakthrough. The catch, as always, is that it’s on a remote untouched island with dangerous dinosaurs and even more dangerous experimental dinosaurs.
It’s been 50 years since Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece JAWS. REBIRTH steals, borrows, pays homage to JAWS in several ways in many of the film’s most exciting sequences of dinosaurs chasing our heroes on a boat in the ocean. While the thrills are at their highest at these moments, one can’t help but be reminded of how JAWS did it better 50 years ago. Nonetheless, giant dinosaurs on screen terrorizing people is always exciting, no matter how much lesser the film is by comparison to its predecessors.
The absolute best sequence in the film involves the one scene with the T-Rex, which makes the famous short armed carnivore remain the king of the franchise. The set up is a bit silly as a young woman foolishly inflates a raft right in front of a sleeping T-Rex. But Gareth Edwards masterfully directs the action with tension and thrills, keeping the audience at the edge of their seat waiting for the moment the ferocious dinosaur appears and notices the gang escape before attempting to corner and devour them as they get down stream. Edwards’ previous films (MONSTERS, GODZILLA, ROGUE ONE: A STAR WARS STORY, and THE CREATOR) might all be better than JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH, but that doesn’t mean the film is terrible. My family had a great time at the theater, but it’s definitely a more low level good time summer movie that probably won’t ever be rewatched again.
The cast is great and bringing in Scarlet Johansson as a rebellious Han-Solo type who’s in it for the money, but has some moral sensibility really helps lead the story. JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH has a solid cast and some entertaining character development. While I think JURASSIC WORLD is the second best JURASSIC movie, JURASSIC WORLD: REBIRTH probably falls somewhere just after, but grouped in the middle. Even if REBIRTH doesn’t land the ending and is slightly slow with boring exposition, you could definitely do a lot worse than dinosaurs on the big screen for some cool summer entertainment.
