Apex Movie Review
Maybe not quite to the quality level of 1994’s A RIVER WILD starring Meryl Streep and Kevin Bacon, but Charlize Theron and Taron Egerton’s intense adventure thriller APEX is a rip roaring good time nonetheless.
After a mountain climber’s tragic experience haunts her due to a fatal decision, Sasha (Charlize Theron) retreats to the Australian wilderness for isolation. Unfortunately, the solo kayaking journey turns into a life and death cat and mouse game when a deceptive local (Taron Egerton) targets her as his next prey in his psychotic ritualistic torture hunt.
Directed by Baltasar Kormákur (BEAST, EVEREST, 2 GUNS), APEX is a frightening thriller with action and excitement led by two phenomenal stars. Streaming on Netflix, APEX runs at a brisk, fully entertaining 1 hour and 35 minutes. The beautiful scenery of snowy mountains to Australian rocky and river-filled terrain is quite exquisite, even if some of the bigger effects don’t land as well. The strength of APEX is in two parts, the hi-def adventurous landscape and the lead actors.
Theron is perfect as the capable heroine who is not only believable as the tough, independent heroine, but also has a relatable vulnerability that locks her in with the audience. Taron Egerton is incredible! First gaining trust with a relaxed magnetic charisma turned to terrifying maniacal wickedness. The musical beats and his exaggerated dance as he prepares for the hunts is reason alone to check out this one. APEX is a fun, wild ride with Theron and Egerton leading the way.
