The Ten Best Movies of 2013 – Nathan's List

7. SAVING MR. BANKS I’m not sure if it is my love for MARY POPPINS or the break from all the heavy films this year but I found SAVING MR. BANKS supercalifragilistic.  Charming and delightful, the behind the movie adaptation of P.L. Travers famous book shows that even the worst situation can be turned into a positive inspiration.

Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy in Before Midnight

6. BEFORE MIDNIGHTPerhaps my least favorite of what is now called “The Before Trilogy,” the third installment takes a look at our beloved couple when the romance has begun to slip away.  The screenplay and performances are an art worth observing as every detail and nuance are superbly represented in these exquisitely deep characters.

Tom Hanks in Captain Phillips

5. CAPTAIN PHILLIPSAnother relentless story that has recently gotten bad press that the captain was supposedly less heroic than the film portrays.  To be honest, it doesn’t affect the fantastic filmmaking from director Paul Greengrass and Tom Hanks’ emotional performance.  The ending is surprisingly inspirational that hit me in an unexpected patriotic way.

4.  STOKERHorror film would be a wrong description but like PSYCHO or CARRIE, the direction takes the forefront in this fascinating dark coming of age story.  STOKER is the first film this year that came out of nowhere to blow me away with a unique telling of a fairly direct story that has some very disturbing turns.
