The Ten Best Movies of 2012 – Nathan's List
5. ANNA KARENINA – Director Joe Wright did something amazing. He made me interested in a story I would otherwise not care about. By creating the most incredible use of moving sets I’ve ever seen on film, ANNA KARENINA captures story, emotions and character with an original and inventive technique that wowed me more than any other film this year.

4. THE CABIN IN THE WOODS – Answering all the simple plot holes and poor character choice questions that nearly every horror film poses, CABIN IN THE WOODS is an original, fulfilling ride like you’ve never seen. Managing to flip the genre on its head, this film is more funny than scary and a revelation to horror movies. I want to watch it again right now and revel in its creativity and cleverness.
3. SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK – This is that romantic comedy in the same vein of JERRY MAGUIRE or WHEN HARRY MET SALLY that you don’t have to be ashamed to love. With excellent performances and lightning chemistry between Bradley Cooper and Jennifer Lawrence, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK is a dark joy all the way to a show stopping finale.

2. ARGO – Who would have thought Ben Affleck, the mediocre actor in such terrible films as BOUNCE, GIGLI, and SURVIVING CHRISTMAS would turn into one of our current best directors. Yeah, I said it. He has made three films and each year one has come out, they get a little higher on my Top Ten List. ARGO blends real life drama, suspense and humor backed up by flawless costuming and production design to bring us one of the most all-around impressive films of the year.

1. DJANGO UNCHAINED – I love Quentin Tarantino. When it comes to inventive storytelling, exciting dialogue and unique filmmaking, the guy has never failed me. I don’t care that his films are long or perhaps structured awkwardly. It all fits so well within his style that I am grinning ear to ear as I witness something I have never seen before. Christoph Waltz, Leonardo DiCaprio and Samuel L. Jackson are wickedly exceptional in this highly unusual, contemporary violent western film about slavery.
