The Ten Greatest Superhero Movies

7. UNBREAKABLE –  I have a feeling this film may bring up the most controversy.  However, this was a fresh take on a played out genre.  M. Night Shyamalan followed up his masterful THE SIXTH SENSE with a superhero origins story like you’ve never seen before.  UNBREAKABLE sort of flips the idea of superheroes and provides a real life setting that for me, was a joy to discover.

6. BATMAN – It wasn’t until 1989 that another superhero film hit the big screen with a “POW.”  Giving a grittier darker look at the genre, Tim Burton gave BATMAN  a real life comic book feel.  With some very inspired casting of the super cool and underrated Michael Keaton as Batman and the unforgettable over-the-top antics of Jack Nicholson as the Joker, BATMAN was the film of my generation.  I immediately  bought posters and toys.  But rather than push me into the world of comics, it heightened my love for summer blockbusters.

5. IRON MAN –  For me, great acting can only get you so far, but Robert Downey Jr.’s Tony Stark is an exception to the rule. His strong performance raises the story level of IRON MAN to unexpected greatness combining humor, action and intrigue perfectly.  I enjoyed CAPTAIN AMERICA: THE FIRST AVENGER and even THOR, but IRON MAN is the only solo Avenger to make a spot on this list.

X-Men First Class

4. X-MEN: FIRST CLASS – I watched this again recently and was really blown away at how much I enjoyed it.  The chemistry between James McAvoy’s Professor Xavier and Michael Fassbender’s Magneto is, well… magnetic.  The rest of the supporting cast including Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult and Kevin Bacon aren’t so bad themselves, propelling this well-crafted Matthew Vaughn directed Marvel film to exceptional heights.  For the record: X2: X-MEN UNITED would have made the list as well but due to the combination of actors and characters in the upcoming X-MEN: DAYS OF FUTURE PAST, I felt my rules disqualified it.
