Top Ten Best and Worst Moments at the 85th Annual Academy Awards

5. Anne Hathaway, Kristen Stewart (Worst) – Is it me or is Anne Hathaway becoming the Taylor Swift of the film industry?  She is super talented but equally annoying.  Her unfortunate dress kept untastefully pointing to everyone in the audience as she accepted her award.  Kristen Stewart on the other hand is equal parts annoying and talentless.  Your mother needs to run a comb through that hair young lady, this is the Oscars!

Ben Affleck, Academy Awards

4 . Jennifer Lawrence, Ben Affleck (Best) – Something is utterly charming about Miss Lawrence.  She handles pressure with ease,  humble yet grateful, and has a good sense to know that winning an Oscar isn’t the greatest thing in the world.  Plus, she trips on her way to the podium giving the allusion that she could be any of us.  But that gorgeous Oscar gown screamed winner before the award was even announced.  As for Ben Affleck, his speech was probably the sweetest and most sincere of the night.

Seth MacFarlane Oscars

3. Seth MacFarlane (Best) – I’m using “Best” loosely. He wasn’t the greatest host ever but after two years of bad hosting (a bland Billy Crystal and a historically atrocious James Franco and Anne Hathaway) MacFarlane came off pretty good.  The jokes weren’t gold but they were amusing and kept me laughing throughout.  He was wise to be self deprecating and use other stars like Channing Tatum, Charlize Theron, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Daniel Radcliff in the bits to relieve some of the attention. Some jokes didn’t quite land, coming off more sexist than funny.  He still managed to throw in some edgy humor that worked – “John Wilkes Booth got into Lincoln’s head better than anyone.”  Heyooo!

2. Musical Numbers (Worst) – I’m not apposed to celebrating music in film.  I love music in film, but did we really need to remember three musicals from the last decade?  And can we get some recognition for MOULIN ROUGE!?  The film revived the musicals and is far better than CHICAGO, DREAMGIRLS and LES MISERABLES.  This was a complete waste of time, just reminding us if you sing in the Supporting Actress category, you automatically win an Oscar.  The show was unnecessarily too long because of it. And please put Barbara Streisand’s “Memories” over the top of the memorandum, rather than having this be her own moment. This is the Oscars not the Grammys.

Daniel Day Lewis, Jennifer Lawrence, Anne Hathaway, Christoph Waltz at The Academy Awards

1.  Nominees and Winners (Best) – I can’t remember a year the Academy got it so right.  I loved the films nominated and the winners chosen.  ARGO won three including Best Picture, LIFE OF PI won four including Best Director, SILVER LININGS PLAYBOOK, AMOUR, ANNA KARENINA all picked up an award and DJANGO UNCHAINED picked up two unexepected but very deserved wins for Best Supporting Actor and Best Original Screenplay.  All is well with the world.
