Alex Proyas looking at Sam Worthington to star in Dracula: Year Zero

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

Well…perhaps I should have put a “maybe” at the end of that title.  A source wrote into the good folks over at Latino Review and dropped the scoop that Universal is looking to update another of their classic monster movies, this time with Hollywood’s current “it” boy, Sam Worthington.  Supposedly, this Dracula tale will be more of an origins story, focusing on Vlad the Impaler, who was supposedly the inspiration for Bram Stoker’s original Dracula.  Alex Proyas (THE CROW) is attached to direct the film from writers Matt Sazama and Burk Sharpless, currently called DRACULA: YEAR ZERO.

Dracula has seen many incarnations on the silver screen, but none of them have been particularly appealing.  This story could be interesting if they chose to go a more realistic path with it.  The trouble is that every horror movie has to have a hero and I’m guessing with a name like “Vlad the Impaler”, that Vlad is not a nice guy.  I have to assume that one doesn’t get the nickname “the impaler” unless they’ve done some wacked out stuff in their day.
