Dwayne Johnson to star in biopic about country musician Charley Pride

Just when you think Dwayne Johnson is making his way back into action films (remember FAST FIVE opened today) he goes and throws us all a curve ball. Today we’re learning that the former wrestler “The Rock” will both produce and star in a biopic about country music legend Charley Pride. Originally the role of Mr. Pride was going to go to Terrence Howard, but after some changes at the studio the project fell to the wayside until it was picked up and Johnson was attached to star. Mr. Pride discusses in an interview his thoughts about the casting change, he says, “Terrence is no doubt a more in-depth actor academically, but Dwayne is such a force on screen. It startled me a little at first, but he flew down to Dallas and spent a day with me just sitting, talking recently. And when he left it was like parting with an old friend. We had such similar views on so many things.” The film will follow the interesting career of Mr. Pride most likely including his days as a baseball player in the Negro league, to getting drafted for the Army and then his eventual turn to country music. No word on when production will start.

I think Dwayne Johnson is quite a force to be reckoned with onscreen and I’ve been waiting to see him in a dramatic and breakout performance. As a country singer though? I have faith.
