Modern Love Column Gets Optioned by Columbia Pictures

The popular NY Times column ‘Modern Love’ has been optioned by Columbia Pictures to become a full length motion picutre.

The news itself is kind of confusing if you’re not familiar with the NY Times column.  Each column is written by a different person and tells a story that somehow deals with love.  So the “film rights” to the column could actually end up being several different movies, with Columbia picking which ones they feel would work as romantic comedies.

The column seems to be good source material as HBO has also just signed on to develop a pilot about a fictional male writer going through a divorce.

Variety goes on to mention that studios have also made deals with the Times for various articles, including the story of immigrants planning  a prom and a student musician working her way through school at a Sonic drive-in.

I wonder if they’re going to try to incorporate the original artwork that’s shown in each article as well.
