When I first read the title THE LOW SELF-ESTEEM OF LIZZIE GILLESPIE, I wasn’t sure if it was going to be a lighthearted children’s movie about a girl overcoming some of her self-esteem issues or a depressing drama about a woman turning to drugs and alcohol to get over past issues. Either way, I thought Anne Hathaway would be a good fit since the talented actress has proven herself so versatile over the years. As it turns out, I was completely wrong and the film is actually a romantic comedy about a girl with low self-esteem that dates a bunch of losers, but starts to regain confidence when an unusually hot guy starts pursuing her.
If it sounds clever and original, it’s because it was co-written by Mindy Kaling. Kaling has become one of our favorites over the years, working her way from staff writer to star of ‘The Office’ and then getting her own TV show with ‘The Mindy Project’. She also just had a book published, called ‘Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me? (And Other Concerns)’, which from the title just sounds funny. The sad thing about THE LOW SELF-ESTEEM OF LIZZIE GILLESPIE is that Mindy Kaling would be perfect for it, but she’s not quite a big enough start to get the studio behind her. But Anne Hathaway will do well with it, I’m sure. Right now, Anne Hathaway is the only one attached, so the film still needs co-stars and a director. I’m sure with her attached, the rest will soon follow and this will get started quickly. (THR)
