The Lost City Movie Review
Mindless entertaining comedies are a dime a dozen, but mindless, entertaining, comedies that actually work are fewer than expected. I should really tack on adventure too. THE LOST CITY starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum is an entertaining adventure romp that has more than a few laughs that will surely satisfy nearly any filmgoing audience.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen a star powered vehicle with some genuine laughs. Sure THE LOST CITY has some very easy and obvious jokes and as a whole will probably leave most viewers’ psyche not long after they’ve seen the film, but it’s still fun.
Sandra Bullock plays a famous romance novelist, Loretta Sage. She is in a bit of a rut feeling like her books and stories are a bit meaningless. The cover model for her romance/adventure novels is Alan, otherwise known as the hunky character Dash, played by the very funny Channing Tatum. Alan has embraced his life as a book cover model that makes millions of women swoon. His dopey good looks but optimistic, kind, and appreciative manner towards the salty, educated Loretta is the perfect balance in this easy but playful romp.
Loretta has translated some real life hieroglyphics within her stories, which has caught the attention of evil billionaire, Abigail Fairfax, played by Daniel Radcliffe. Abigail kidnaps Loretta to help translate a clue that he hopes will lead him to a lost treasure within a lost city in the jungle. Dash or Alan plans to help rescue Loretta, but his lack of wits and his pampered life doesn’t quite match his model physique and an error of comedy ensues.
The exotic locations are beautiful but it’s the star power that the film truly leans upon. Both Bullock and Tatum are wonderful in their respective roles, lighting up the screen proving why they are both Hollywood movie stars. But it’s Brad Pitt’s superstar appearance as heroic rescue mission operator, Jack Trainer, that brings THE LOST CITY to a whole other level. His charisma and humor and how the story chooses to use his character helps every character and their buffoonery rise to new heights. THE LOST CITY isn’t anything particularly special, but it is a good time.
