The top ten most anticipated summer movies of 2015

7. SOUTHPAW (July 31) – Jake Gyllenhaal should have been nominated for an Oscar last year for his creepy performance in NIGHTCRAWLER.  Well his physical transformation becoming a ripped boxer who is a loser in his personal life but a winner professionally in SOUTHPAW is just up the Academy voters ally.  Director Antoine Fuqua gave us the insightful character study in TRAINING DAY.  Since then he has had a string of lackluster but moderately successful action genre films.  SOUTHPAW could go either way as a film, but I firmly believe it will be worth seeing for Gyllenhaal’s performance.

6. ALOHA (May 29) – Cameron Crowe is responsible for writing and directing some of the most revered romantic films in history with ALMOST FAMOUS, JERRY MAGUIRE, and SAY ANYTHING. True he has had some less than stellar work as well, but I believe he’s due for another great one. With another all-star cast including, Bradley Cooper, Emma Stone, Rachel McAdams, John Krasinski, Alec Baldwin, and Bill Murray, I’m hopeful Crowe can deliver another humorous and touching love story.

5. TOMORROWLAND (May 22) – Brad Bird (THE INCREDIBLES, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE – GHOST PROTOCOL) is directing this strange Disney story about a former boy genius (George Clooney) and a curious teen exploring mysterious new worlds that involving their collective memory.  The main players involved in this mystifying tale has me excited to a point that is impossible to explain.

Tom Hardy in Mad Max: Fury Road

4. MAD MAX: FURY ROAD (May 15) – The original three Mad Max films, starring Mel Gibson, set the standard for the post-apocalyptic demise of the human race.  Now 30 years later director and writer George Miller returns to his famous franchise with Tom Hardy and Charlize Theron.  If the film is anywhere near as good as its predecessors or as cool as the trailers look, we are in for a treat.
