David Fincher to direct the Bobby Fischer biography Pawn Sacrifice

Posted by: Brad Sturdivant

David Fincher is a cherished director around here with FIGHT CLUB being one of the favorites amongst a lot movie fans.  His CURIOUS CASE OF BENJAMIN BUTTON received mixed reviews, but there’s no denying the director’s talent.  After wrapping up THE SOCIAL NETWORK (aka; The Facebook movie) with Justin Timberlake, the director is set to tackle another real-life story with PAWN SACRIFICE.  The film is the life story of troubled chess prodigy Bobby Fischer.  Steven Knight wrote the script.

What little I know about Bobby Fischer I learned from the wonderful film SEARCHING FOR BOBBY FISCHER, but it seems like his life is ripe for a movie.  ESPN writer Jeremy Schaap did a piece on Bobby Fischer a few years ago and it seems like Fischer lost himself after his big chess match with Boris Spassky.  I’m anxious to see who they cast in the lead for this…maybe his other SOCIAL NETWORK star, Jesse Eisenberg?

Along with PAWN SACRIFICE, Fincher may also direct an English remake of THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO for producer Scott Rudin.  Interesting enough, Variety claims that Fincher is the first director to get a “final cut” authority for Columbia pictures.
