Weekend box office: Numbers on hold indefinitely

I’ve been writing the weekend box office news consistently for over ten years and not once have I ever written a post to say there’s no news to report.  But alas, we’re in strange times.  Most studios have halted reporting numbers and now Comscore, the company that tracks the numbers for exhibitors, has said they’re on hiatus amid the Coronavirus pandemic.  So with nothing to report, we will also be suspending our weekly box office column.  Of course, as soon as there’s something to report, we’ll be back with the news.

In the meantime, it looks like a lot of the movies due to come out in late March or early April are searching for alternative release strategies.  LOVE BIRDS, starring Kumail Nanjiani, is going straight to Netflix, which might be an answer for some movies.  But the real question is what’s going to happen to the summer blockbusters (looking at you, BLACK WIDOW) that normally make bank the first weekend and then slip off in the subsequent weeks.  It will be interesting to watch the trends, albeit alone and from the comfort of your own home.
