Sacha Baron Cohen's new trailer for The Dictator reveals some plot details

Sacha Baron Cohen in The Dictator

I’ve tried to like Sacha Baron Cohen and his character films, but no matter how hard I try, I just can’t seem to get into his comedy schtick.  Both BORAT and BRUNO had some hilarious moments, but I felt like they got really old, really quick.  So it’s always with cautious optimism that I look forward to Sacha Baron Cohen’s next character-driven movie, in this case, THE DICTATOR.  Up until this point, the trailers and TV spots have relied heavily on the funny notion of a Middle Eastern dictator visiting America.  In fact, this is the first look at the film where we don’t see the scene with him and Megan Fox, which is either a positive or a negative, depending on your point of view.

Personally, this new trailer gives me hope since it shows more of the overall plot.  I guess I should back up and point out that I’m excited because this trailer shows that the film actually has a plot, which is something that was missing in Sacha Baron Cohen’s previous outings.  The good news here is that the comedy from Sacha Baron Cohen doesn’t seem to rely on one specific idea, but rather it will focus on the dictator flaunting his wealth for a part of the film, then trying to cope with not having it anymore for the rest of the film.  It’s a little like TRADING PLACES, but the trailer made me laugh.  I think Sacha Baron Cohen has grown up after starring in movies like SWEENEY TODD and HUGO, which will hopefully pay off in THE DICTATOR.

The film stars Sacha Baron Cohen, Megan Fox, Anna Faris, Ben Kingsley, John C. Reilly and B.J. Novak (from ‘The Office’).  The film is once again directed by frequent Sacha Baron Cohen collaborator Larry Charles.  THE DICTATOR hits theaters everywhere on May 11th, 2012.
