Twentieth Century Fox has announced that the Joss Whedon film that inspired an entire universe will be coming to Blu-ray September 13, 2011. The 1992 film BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, starring Kristy Swanson, Luke Perry, Donald Sutherland, Paul Reubens, David Arquette, Rutger Hauer and a young Hilary Swank, follows Buffy Summers (Swanson), a shallow high school cheerleader who discovers that she is the one girl chosen in her generation to protect the world from vampires. She must start her battle in her home town of Los Angeles as she goes up against the big baddie Lothos (Hauer).

Though I do love this film, I’ll be the first to admit that it was a bit cheesy and didn’t have a lot of cinematic merits. What I will say is that this film kicked off one of the greatest shows on television that even had a successful spin-off (that would be, Angel). Whedon fans will add this Blu-ray to their film collection as it was a bit of a landmark for the director. Also, if you haven’t seen the film, it’s really worth a watch just to see Hilary Swank’s pre-Oscar performance as her character is quite a hoot.

No special features have been announced just yet, but stay tuned for more news.
