Weekend box office: Geostorm and Only the Brave can’t beat A Madea Halloween

This is a strange weekend, featuring a bit of everything when it comes to movies Hollywood doesn’t know what to do with.  First, you have the disaster film GEOSTORM, which cost a ton of money to make but felt like it should have been released 20 years earlier.  Then you had the feel good drama ONLY THE BRAVE, which had a good cast and good direction, but was never going to appeal to the masses.  I’m sure at one time, THE SNOWMAN was expected to do much better, but after getting destroyed by critics, it never really had a chance.  But give it to Universal for their all-in approach to the marketing; I felt like I was watching a trailer for THE SNOWMAN every time I turned on the TV.  Then there’s the box office winner BOO 2! A MADEA HALLOWEEN.  Madea’s movies are always going to make money and this one was a no-brainer as far as the release date.

Given that next week is the last weekend before Halloween, JIGSAW should easily take the top spot.  I haven’t seen a whole lot of marketing for this, but it’s part of the SAW franchise and is releasing at the perfect time and with zero competition, so it should have an easy path to #1.  The other new movie opening is the George Clooney directed and Matt Damon starring SUBURBICON, but I doubt that will be able to do much at the box office, even with a star studded cast.  For those getting frustrated with the lackluster titles released the past few weeks, you can look forward to THOR: RAGNAROK coming the first weekend in November.  Note: the numbers below will be updated as they become final.

1. Boo 2! A Madea Halloween $21.5m

2. Geostorm $13m
