Even if you don’t know anything about BLUE VALENTINE, you can tell by watching this trailer that it’s going to be heart-wrenching. Of course, if you do know something about the film, you probably know that the drama around it is mainly focused on the NC-17 rating it recently received from the MPAA. That drama is taking away from the supposedly Oscar-worthy performances from Ryan Gosling and Michelle Williams, who are playing a couple that have a great start to their relationship and then suffer through a slowly disintegrating marriage. Typically, the MPAA is okay with sex and okay with violence as long as you keep the two things separate. My guess is that at some point in the film, it violated that unwritten rule.
The film stars Ryan Gosling, Michelle Williams, Mike Vogel, John Doman and Ben Shenkman. Derek Cianfrance is directing from a script he wrote. The film is expected to hit theaters in time to be eligible for this year’s awards. Watch the trailer here.
