Elle Fanning is looking to join Angelina Jolie in Maleficent

Disney’s MALEFICENT (based off the Sleeping Beauty fairytale) has been in the works for quite some time, but as directors continued to come and go, Angelina Jolie has remained attached to play the title role for years now. So the project is always “close” to happening. And after Jolie hinted it would be her next film, we assumed things would start moving quickly. The first casting piece to fall into place is that of Princess Aurora, who is set to be played by Elle Fanning. I’ve heard nothing but good things about the Broadway show, so I’m excited to see this one finally hit the big screen.
Although many famous, proven directors have circled the project (most recently Guillermo Del Toro), Disney has instead turned to production designer turned first time director Robert Stromberg to bring the film to life. I like the teaming of Jolie and Fanning, but I’m not sure why any studio would trust a big budget tentpole to a first time director. MALEFICENT should hit theaters some time in 2013.
