Michael Bay talks about Transformers 4, his final installment in the franchise

Transformers Dark of the Moon Box

Even though I think the TRANSFORMER films are incredibly fun summer blockbusters that I’ll watch multiple times, I’m a little disappointed that Michael Bay has decided to do a fourth film. Lucky for us he’s said that the fourth installment in the TRANSFORMERS franchise (currently titled TRANSFORMERS 4) will not be a reboot, but they might go ahead and take our favorite transformers into outer space. What?!

Here’s a bit of what Michael Bay has said about his final film in the TRANSFORMERS franchise, “I don’t want to say reboot because then people will think we’re doing a SPIDER-MAN and starting from the beginning. We’re not. We’re taking the story that you’ve seen — the story we’ve told in three movies already — and we’re taking it in a new direction. But we’re leaving those three as the history. It all still counts.” About going into space or “off-world”, Bay says, “That feels like the way to go, doesn’t it? I want to go a little off but I don’t want to go too sci-fi. I still want to keep it grounded. That’s what works in these movies, that’s what makes it accessible.” Normally I would cringe at such a statement, but I think if any director can pull it off it will be Michael Bay. He may have some over-the-top movies, but those movies are some of the best to re-watch.

As you may have heard, Shia LaBeouf will not be returning for the TRANSFORMERS 4 film so that may be why Michael Bay is deciding to take our favorite robots out of this world. Michael Bay is also handing over the directing reigns to someone else for any follow-up films. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see how everything comes together. We won’t have to wait to terribly long though, because TRANSFORMERS 4 (still a working title) is set for a theatrical release of June 29, 2014. Sounds far away, but it’ll be here before we know it.
