The Dark Knight Rises scares The Bourne Legacy into moving back one week

Jeremy Renner and Edward Norton in The Bourne Legacy

No one wants to compete with THE DARK KNIGHT RISES, even in its third weekend in release, so it makes perfect sense that Universal would decide to move the release date of THE BOURNE LEGACY from August 3rd to August 10th, in hopes that people will be sick of seeing Batman for the third or fourth time and will instead want to watch someone not named Jason Bourne star in a Bourne movie.  The movie also means that THE BOURNE LEGACY will avoid a head to head collision with the TOTAL RECALL remake, which also hits theaters on August 3rd.

By the time August 10th rolls around, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES will have been in theaters for about 20 days.  I’m not sure Bourne or Recall are going to knock it out of the top spot, even in its third week, but moving further into the summer is probably a good idea.  But I can’t help but wonder if Universal would be so anxious if Matt Damon was starring in the film.  THE BOURNE LEGACY is directed by Tony Gilroy and stars Jeremy Renner, Edward Norton, Rachel Weisz, Joan Allen, Oscar Isaac, Stacy Keach and Scott Glenn.
